Youth Sustainability and Energy Education Program (YSEE)


YSEE is an innovative program in the field of environmental education, launched by IED in 2003. It aims
to promote research in to education for sustainable development (ESD) in primary and secondary schools,
with a focus on energy conservation and environmental protection.

The program is aimed at school teachers in basic education and takes on tasks such as developing teaching
materials, training teachers and holding student activities. It has a strong record in the development of
‘eco-schools’, includes the improvement of school hardware, campus management and teaching activities
promoting the practice of ESD.

Eco-school Model Program

Schools are generally accepted as an important component of a community since people in and around the school receive education and participate in a range of activities there. Therefore, this program endeavors to systematically improve a school's natural ecosystems, energy systems, material recycling and waste management systems. At the same time the program aims to promote a school culture combining its educational function with ecological awareness, offering classroom lectures and holding extracurricular activities. The final significant aim of the program is to realize the construction of eco-schools and turn them in to a practical teaching aid. The students on this campus of an ecoschool will cultivate the concept of sustainable development, and the campus itself will be a model for surrounding communities to follow.

In 2010, IED, with the support of the Vantone Foundation, focused its attention on vulnerable groups and selected the Dandelion Middle School in Beijing Daxing District as its first pilot school to carry out the project, with the expectation of establishing a model of eco-school that can be replicated and scaled up. Currently, the program is also engaged in the promotion of eco-school construction in Qinghai province.

1. To carry out a thorough evaluation of current schools and provide a baseline review with the guidance of the "Eco-community Guidebook " and "Ecological Property Management Guidelines";
2. To complete the planning of eco-schools which feature the integration of ecocommunity construction and educational functions;
3. To improve natural ecosystems and water systems in accordance with the preplanning;
4. To build a resource platform and demonstrate the replication of eco-school construction.

Eco-community Program

On the basis of practical research of the concept of eco-communities, the program aims to learn from positive domestic and international experiences to help construct and supervise ecological communities. Meanwhile the program strives to spread the concept in existing communities and encourage local residents to participate in the community’s improvement and practice low-carbon lifestyles. Pilot programs are constructed to educate surrounding communities. In addition, the program is engaged in a case study of eco-community construction and improvement with the purpose of establishing an evaluation system of ecological communities.

1. To spread the concept and knowledge of environmental protection and promote eco-friendly lifestyles;
2. To offer support to practical research on ecological construction in urban and rural communities, the
development of related policies and practices;
3. To encourage and support residents' participation in community management and ecological construction;
4. To provide research-based theoretical support to eco-community stakeholders.
Major Activities
1. Conduct studies of ecological communities, analyzing improvement of existing communities and
residents' actions in order to develop an "Eco-community Guidebook";
2. Conducting research around property management in ecological communities, while reflecting on current
practices in order to develop Ecological Property Management Guidelines;
3. Studying the achievements of eco-community construction both at home and abroad in order to form an
evaluation system suitable for China's ecological communities.
